The Lake Tahoe News reports that a 32 year old man, Michael Guevara, from South Lake Tahoe was sentenced to 2 years in state prison for a DUI related accident. This may seem like a lengthy sentence, but when you consider that he was facing felony charges for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing two serious injuries, you see that is likely he is very pleased with his results. As is with many of these type of cases, the DUI attorney should probably be thanked for his aid.
When a person is charged with DUI, getting an experienced attorney is often the best move they can make. Guevara was driving in May of this year when he hit two small cars at intersection in Valencia after he ran a red light. Both the vehicles were making a left hand turns in the other direction. As a result, two women were sent to the hospital with severe injuries. Both of them are believed to survive but they have a slow recovery.
Getting a DUI lawyer can help you deal with the stress and decisions of your case. As with Guevara, his lawyer advised him to take responsibility for the accident and to use his lack of criminal record as evidence that it was a one-time mistake. An attorney can also work to dissect your case and look for possible defenses. They will challenge every piece of evidence the prosecution has against you. Every case is defensible, but not every attorney is willing to go the extra mile for you. When you challenge evidence and present your defense, you are establishing a reasonable doubt that is needed in order to find you ‘not guilty'. In many cases, the case will not even go to trial but instead the charges will be dismissed or reduced or the prosecution will offer a reasonable plea deal.
